Support Staff Temporary Part-time Contract

The Practice Application Specialist (PAS) is a key member of the teaching/learning team. They play an important role in supporting the integration of theoretical knowledge into practice by demonstrating, supervising, mentoring, coaching, and assessing nursing skills for students enrolled in programs in the School of Health & Life Sciences.

The PAS will assist in preparing students to apply the required skills that must be demonstrated within the laboratory/clinical environment and facilitates student activities and resources in the Open Access Lab environment. The incumbent acts as a resource to students, faculty and community practicum staff and promotes their program to stakeholders in the placement community.

Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. The incumbent will work up to 24 hours per week at various campus locations (Milton, Brantford, Doon, Downtown Kitchener, Guelph) and long-term care facilities as assigned by the college. The hours of work for this position may include a variety of shifts such as days, evenings, and weekends up to 24 hours a week.

Responsibilities

Organizes for effective delivery of skills demonstration, using the pre-determined criteria available in the programs using a variety of resources
Modifies experiential learning activities as required to observe students’ ability to demonstrate practice capability and decision making, in accordance with program outcomes and the associated Professional Regulatory bodies
Schedules individual and group activities (including remedial work appointments)
Models and demonstrates professional practices and conducts assessment of skills via return demonstrations, for individuals or groups of students
Records the progress of students’ skill mastery using pre-determined assessment tools
Consults with members of the teaching/learning team faculty regarding the student’s progress, especially those having difficulty
Maintains student files for use by the teaching/learning team
Maintains cleanliness of the lab environment daily and ensures lab equipment is in good working order
Supervises students in practicum settings which includes on-going contact with field placement location, liaising with agency staff to promote student learning, observing students in placement setting, meeting with preceptor and/or student, providing verbal and written feedback to students, reviewing mid-term and final preceptor evaluations, providing input to teaching/learning team faculty regarding final grades based on pre-established criteria, and referring students requiring additional support to teaching/learning team
Maintains professional development by accessing current evidence-based research and best practices, remaining aware of changing clinical practice, attending continuing education courses, and consulting with agency staff
Attends pre-semester orientation and planning meetings, frequent teaching/learning team meetings throughout the semester and Program Level meetings as required per semester
Proctors examinations written by students as required at specific times during the academic year

Qualifications

Two-year diploma in Registered Practical Nursing is required; candidates with a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree are also encouraged to apply
Current certificate of competence as a Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse in the province of Ontario in good standing is required
Minimum five years of recent nursing experience in medicine, surgery, or long-term care in an active health care environment is required
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in working with faculty teams, students, and others
High level organizational skills for implementation of activities for students
Self-motivated and creative approach to problem solving
Ability to work independently
Access to reliable transportation and ability to travel to multiple locations is required
